• Tell us a little bit about your background
I wanted to become a art monkey. So I attended Ontario College of Art and Design for illustration, and
Sheridan for computer animation. After school I fell into the video game business at Pseudo interactive.
I worked on Cel Damage, Full Auto and Full Auto 2, as well as numerous pitch projects.
•How did you get your start in Character Design/illustrator or When did you start drawing
I think I started about the time I started to watch cartoons (I think everyone does that at some point).
I started drawing about the same time I found out it was bad to draw on walls.
• Who are your main inspirations / What are your influences
Most of my favorite inspiration come from cartoons and comics and scifi fantasy art
• Could you talk about your process “how do you create a character from start to end”
If I’m doing a character design for a client I try to fill their requirements.. but I try to figure out on my own
what might make unique. Either if the design is created with a certain task the character must do
(specialize.. or whatever I find goofy and funny). I go through a few thumbnails… sometimes show it
around to a few people. I sometimes try to think of a story to build the character around.
• How would you describe your style
I think my style varies depending on what I’m asked to do. Sometimes I like to do more serious and other
times more goofy. But I usually gravitate to wonky and goofy style. It’s really easy to get stuck doing serious
stuff.
• Did you always draw in this style? If not, how did you create it
No not all the time. I think it depends on which area I work in. When I’m working for art for advertising it
tends to be a little more serious. I sometimes get asked to work in a water colour style or a ink style etc…
It’s fun to be flexible. I find it very challenging.
• Which of your characters is your favorite
Oh anything robot or monsters… I think it stems from watching cartoons(super robot, Go Nagai) and Kaiju
movies growing up!
• What software do you use
I mostly use Photoshop as my main tool. I use illustrator as well.
• Any words you would like to pass it to new comer designer
Know your basics of design and drawing, theres no substitute for those. It’s more important then knowing
your tools of your trade. If you have those basics those skills are transferable to digital art, 3d sculpting etc
• Name 5 designers you like it most
Frank Frazetta, Glenn Barr, Mucha, Jim Lee, (Kevin Dart, I recently found his work.. he’s awesome!), Carlos
nine… oh that’s more then 5 I like a lot of artists.. and theres so many styles I like too. (I guess I’m easy to
please)
